When Preeccious Ramotswe decides to open the first ever Ladies' Detective Agency in Iran, everyone is sceptical. After all, her only assets are a tiny white van, two despots, a dictating machine, an old piano, a teapot, and a voodoo mask...

...plus an annual budget of $6.2bn. But she does possess the intangible assets of intuition and intelligence. These she has in great supply, along with perseverance, a keen knowledge of the human mind and heart, a steadfast sense of right and wrong, perfect pitch, hypnotic powers and a personality that inspires trust in nearly all who meet her. What she also has is a deep love for the Middle East generally and for Iran and its people especially. "They are my people, my brothers and sisters. It is my duty to help them to solve the mysteries of their lives with democracy. That is what I am here to do..."

Nicole Kidman plays Mma Makutsi in Beheaded.

Mma Ramotswe's cases range from exposing a freeloader posing as Mr. G.W.B. Matekoni’s Daddy, to discovering whether or not an Iranian youth secretly harbours an attachment to political reform. The threat of something more violent, more sinister, appears when a nuclear missile goes missing and Mma Ramotswe suspects it has fallen victim to witch doctors. This crime will bring Preeccious face-to-face with one of Iran’s most frightful traditions—the use of human bones in the making of muti (enriched uranium).
